So split will allow me to split a file. This is great, but how can I then
turn that into several messages that are outgoing? I guess the problem here
is that I don't understand entirely how sendmail and procmail work.
How would I get a message into a file by itself (not an entire mailbox) then
how do I call an executable from a procmail recipe? Then, how do I send the
files that have been split up to the forwarded address?

split is /usr/bin/split; you can read the man page ('man split') for
more information...
