testing - user known (SmartList)

Hello
 I am trying to run a list on a server. I followed the instructions but
couldn't get testing list to work.  550: user unkown.
 I haven't modified sendmail.cf only to include a new aliases files:
slist.aliases. There is no mentioning of procmail in teh sendmail.cf.
 Have I did something wrong?
