In your original message you said it worked, except for a missing
variable or something. Are you sure you haven't messed with this or
another makefile?

This almost always means the same thing: spaces appear where you want a
TAB in the Makefile.
Since no one else has reported this it definitely means your makefiles
have been corrupted somehow.
