The problem was solved (thanks to "Bruce J.A. Nourish"

| sed -e 's/----~-~>/,/----_->/d'
My sed doesn't like the initial s:
| sed -e '/----~-~>/,/----_->/d'
Just to avoid confusing people as to why this might work, the first
line of the egroups ad sponsor line actually ends in "----~-~>" rather
than the "eGroups Sponsor" line stated originally (above).
Also, not very long ago it was different, with
..."--------<e|-" to ..."--------|e>-" delimiters,
and before that it was only strings of '---', so whether
(or for how long) it stays the same is anyone's guess.
(OT: BTW, the reason people are wanting to remove these now, all of
a sudden, is that egroups has moved them from the bottom to the
top of the mail message, "in your face.")
