Philip Guenther answered my question re: problems splitting a pipe to a
perl one-liner over multiple lines, saying in part:
| When procmail passes commands to the shell, it leaves the
| backslash/newline combos in the string it passes to the shell**.
| The shell generally strips these out, but it doesn't remove them when
| they occur between single-quotes.

Thanks for finding the question buried amongst the rest of the mess,
and even more for the answer. It gives me something to play with and
learn from beyond this one example. I appreciate it.
