No, they are not. Spaces are not valid characters in email
addresses.

They certainly are valid in the local part of an email address.

Do not make the assumption that local parts of email addresses
conform to UNIX user naming rules, or any particular OS rules, for
that matter. When they, or any other characters outside the set of
atext and '.' in a supported order are present, the address ought to
be presented as a quoted string, and not as a dot-atom. See RFC2822
pp 16-17, and equivalent in RFC822.

Whether or not you want to handle them is another matter entirely.
