my problem is reputably i am the wrong shell and/or
machine in the mail server system. this causes me
not to get past square one and my problem has to do
with this:
When sending mail to someone with procmail in his/her .forward I sometimes
get back an error saying: "User doesn't have a valid shell for mailing to
programs."
This indicates that the mail arrives on a mailserver which most likely has
a different user database (/etc/passwd) where the login shell specified
for the recipient is not present in /etc/shells. Contact your
administrator to put the name of that shell in /etc/shells.
of course i IMMEDIATELY contacted my admin but his reply
made it clear that he was in a confused fog or something..
well.. he said he wasn't sure my shell would support procmail
(despite the fact the *#(_at_)*#& is installed on the freek excuse
my french)
okay.. no offense i hope.. but a friend of mine who is
decent with UNIX told me that my admins r on crack.. i didn't
want to put it so bluntly but i felt vindicated.. these
many months of struggling with procmail i have never really
felt something was right here.. i wasn't the stupid one (though
in terms of being a serious unix hack i guess i am not
the smart one fine.. i have been a UNIX user for years i have
done with it what i needed which hasn't been much more than
file management and a few app compilations.. i used it to
build my website at: http://itsa.ucsf.edu/~kayve from scratch
big freekin deal i guess)..
okay. i might be digging myself into a hole agin i am sorry.
i have complained about people not giving it to me straight
but i guess i am undoubtably guilty of the same exact thing.
okay here is my question (FINALLY sorry)
this business about the shell being relevant.. i had an idea.
they provide me with a WHOPPING .profile that i guess must
generate all the menu *(_at_)#*@# that i get on this system when
i log on. could this be changing the shell to something
that can't handle procmail on me? can i safely
mv .profile my.profile
and loggoff safely? will change shell then stick?
