Thank you very much for the comprehensive reply. I shall persevere - I
can't have some clever spammer nobbling my recipes.
I can get a CR into the name but not a newline. The newline is changed to
a space by sendmail. Starting of with tabCRNL
Interesting log line on the way out:

It came back from the ISP as "^I\^M "@clifford.ac
Appeared in Pine as:

So I'd guess that sendmail would strip an incoming NL as well.
