I just wanted to point out that the variable is not a software requirement but rather a user preference. Most people find the use of $NL more legible and less prone to getting messed up when you make other edits later.

Good point. This also mean, of course, that you can name it anything you want

NEWLINE="
"
FRED="
"

Whilst I'm here, another very useful one that I, myself, no longer use, is the whitespace

#Contains space, tab
WS="       "

so in recipes where you would say:
* ^Subject:[    ]+text

you can use

* ^Subject:[$WS]+text

I don't personally use this because I used (.*\<)? instead, but the $WS assignment is great beacuse you won't lose the tab character via copying and pasting or emailing or placing on a website, &c.
