MAILDIR as test -d

The initial value of MAILDIR is $HOME. 
See man procmailrc for the Unless. 

If you set MAILDIR to a non-existing directory name, 
the value of MAILDIR becomes dot.

  MAILDIR
  LOG = "$MAILDIR"   # dot

  MAILDIR = ""
  LOG = "$MAILDIR"   # dot
 
  MAILDIR = "..."
  LOG = "$MAILDIR"   # dot

  MAILDIR = "/dev/null"
  LOG = "$MAILDIR"   # dot
