I suspect file permissions or ownership on matthias's spool.
The permissions are fine:
-rw------- 1 matthias root 44555716 Aug 5 10:39 /var/spool/mail/matthias
And, I'd've suspected something like:

Heh... my guess was:
quota -v

matthias(_at_)pallas:~$ quota -v
-su: quota: command not found
More than enough filesystem space, no quotas.
