I've been having a lot of trouble with my ISP and sometimes they dump my
inbox and I need to rely on my backup cache.  

Don't use INBOX.  I don't at my ISP.  I have a INBOX_2 in my $HOME/mail 
and I dump all the $DEFAULT stuff in there.

Or, maybe I don't understand your environment...
