Well, the issue is that the home directory is writeable by others.
This is non-standard and generally an exceptionally bad idea.
Yes, the cause is historical. I used to share a couple of
subdirectories with my husband, so made my home directory
group-writeable. Once we changed to a separate data partition that
wasn't necessary.
It's the one thing that I didn't think of - and nor, for that matter,
did others with a good deal of experience. That's why I thought it
important to make sure that the archives covered this.
