Why is all this relevant? Eric complains that the complexity
of SPF is
such that it cannot be implemented in sendmail.cf. I beleive him, but
this doesn't seem to be a good argument. SPF is clearly
implementable in
a full featured language (these already exist).
Some history here, one of the most common criticisms of sendmail over the
years is that the rule set language is too complex and too powerful rather
than not being powerful enough.
Simple protocol designs are generally much more successful than complex
ones. HTTP replaced FTP by removing layer on layer of unnecessary
complexity. XML replaced SGML by throwing out junk.
