Ted Hardie, an Area Director for the IETF, just sent the following
message to the MXCOMP mailing list. Basically, this means that there
will almost certainly be an official Internet standard (RFC) created
for the stuff that SPF tries to address. Whether the IETF creates an
RFC that is compatible with SPF is far less certain.

A couple of comments to my earlier post.

First, contrary to what the Subject: line says, the IETF working group
has not yet been approved. As mentioned in the message I forwarded,
that will most likely happen in two weeks

The IETF works on "rough consensus", so the resulting RFC will depend
on who shows up on the MXCOMP mailing list.

Just to be clear, by "rough consensus", that doesn't mean that the
IETF works by a simple majority rules. It's not like General Motors
could get every one of their employees to join the list and vote to
make the anti-spam solution be to buy a Chevy. I encourage everyone
who is interested to join the MXCOMP mailing list, but we can not
"stuff the ballot box" and "force SPF through."

It's not everyone on this mailing list has the same opinions about
SPF. I know that there are a few that don't even like SPF, and it is
this very diversity that I think has made SPF as strong a standard as
it is. For the most part, Meng has run the SPF project very much like
the IETF will (hopefully) run the WG.

What I want to see by SPF-discuss subscribers joining the MXCOMP list
is for our experiences with SPF (good and bad) to be shared with
others. There will almost certainly be a lot of people on that list
that are involved with things like DNS internals and other email
issues that will bring very important knowledge to the working group,
but lack some of what we have learned.
