sorry, I did not mention I need to create an FO file that I will use to
create a PDF with FOP, FOP currently does not automatically resize cells.

I don't believe any browsers would know how to apply a 'point' size to a
table column, only fonts. I think you could possibly use px or em sizing
on
a font and also utilize the same unit on the column. Still, even then the
units aren't going to make much sense unless you use a fixed width font.
If
don't size anything, the table will size itself appropriately (most of the
time).

is it possible to set a column-width to pt? That would be ok. If I had

characters at 12pt that would make the column-width 144pt. Is that
feasible?
