the short answer: you can't update a variable in XSLT, but what you want is
possible. You need to recursively call a named template; call that template
with the current accumulated value as input and increase the value within
the template (and then call it again from within itself, with the new
increased value as input).

I am trying to accumulate a variable but not succesful...
here is my xml:
