or

<xsl:test="@someattributename=''">

or

<xsl:test="not(@someattributename)">

how to match attributes in templates?

this is what i'm doing to copy all nodes except for a specific element name. 
  how do i specify a specific attribute inthe if statement?

      <xsl:if test="not(name()='someelementname')">
          <xsl:copy-of select="."/>
      </xsl:if>
</xsl:template>
