My file structure is as follows.
<yy id="test">
<xx yyy="184"/>
</yy>
<yy id="test2">
<xx yyy="185"/>
</yy>
so assuming id is of type ID
<xsl:attribute name="path"><xsl:value-of select="id('test')/xx"/></
xsl:attribute>
will produce path="" as the string value of the xx element is empty.
<xsl:attribute name="path"><xsl:value-of select="id('test')/xx/@yyy"/></
xsl:attribute>
will produce path="185"
assuming your <xsl:attribute are in a position in the stylesheet where
it is legal to generate attribute nodes.
