Actually, test="$foo = $foo" can return false already as it
is, e.g. if $foo is set to NaN. Does this mean that the
"constant" NaN isn't idempotent (thinking of it as a function
of zero arguments)? Or to put it another way, number() is not
idempotent if its argument is "snizzlfritz" ... right?
I prefer to think of it as meaning that the "=" operator has a meaning
that is slightly removed from a mathematical equality.
