Why does this not select the name of the root *element* but
instead gives me the text value of that element, i.e., the
concatenated text values of every element in my document?
<xsl:template match="/" >
<xsl:value-of select="(/node()[1])[name()]" />
<xsl:apply-templates />
</xsl:template>
You have asked for the string value of the first child node that also
has a name (more accurately, those members of {the set of the first
child element} that have a name). You got what you asked for.
What you really had in mind is probably
select='name(node())'
