Since the example works when an explicit attribute value is set, it means
Xalan found the abc namespace. However, adding this code still doesn't yield
the desired result. Default values still won't work. Any other ideas?
Thanks.

I have replaced my abc.xml with the code you provided and it still doesn't
recognize the default value from the abc.xsd. Also, you wrote
'xsi:schemaLocation="abc
abc.xsd"', what is the syntax of "abc abc.xsd"?
See http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-0/#schemaLocation
"The schemaLocation attribute contains pairs of values: The first member of
each pair is the namespace for which the second member is the hint
describing
where to find to an appropriate schema document." Make sure abc.xsd can be
found.
