I have a template,
<xsl:template match="purchaseOrder/items/quantity">
<xsl:element name="quant"><xsl:value-of select="current()"/></xsl:element>
</xsl:template>
You could more simply do
<xsl:template match="purchaseOrder/items/quantity">
<quant><xsl:value-of select="."/></quant>
</xsl:template>
By changing value-of select=sum(current()) it throws an error.
Assuming you meant select="sum(current())" with teh "" then it should
not be an error but current() only returns one node so the sum() will
only be taking the sum of one thing, so it will be the same as using
number().
.I would like to get the sum of all
the 'quantity' fields within items.
so you want a template for items not for quantity
<xsl:template match="purchaseOrder/items">
<xsl:value-of select="sum(quantity)"/>
</xsl:template>
