thanks a lot for your help. That was exactly what I wanted to do.

      select="$doc/root/object[(_at_)id=$object-id]/path[(_at_)xlink:href]"/>


That would return the string value of a path element, the string value
of the element you showed is "" as the path element is empty.

You seem to want the string value of the href attribute, not the string
value of a path element that has an href attribute, so that should be

path/@xlink:href

not


path[(_at_)xlink:href]
