"Squigly brackets" are known as "the attribute value template (AVT). They are
the only alternative to this construction:

You mean
<FLD>
<xsl:attribute name="name">
<xsl:value-of select="@name"/>
</xsl:attribute>
</FLD>
(no select on xsl:attribute)
