This would happen if for some reason the text after the 'Figure 1.' came
from a CDATA node.
Since you are examining $caption_title, which could be a node set, it is
possible that it was constructed with a CDATA node.
There are no CDATA nodes in the Xpath data model, and a CDATA marked
section in the source does not change the interpretation of white space.
