Your book talks about canonical documents, and what I want is
a tool that indents a document without changing its
semantics. Is there no such tool by definition?
If your document design is such that whitespace in certain places is
defined to be insignificant, and your applications respect this by
ignoring whitespace in those positions, then you can safely use an
indenter that adds whitespace in those positions. If it isn't, you
can't.
