Shouldn't that be self::define?
not if you are asking if the nearest such ancestor is a choice

then 'requires' there be a choice nearer the document root.
no we're in ancestor axis step so [1] means nearer the ref element.

Since I now know that choice is never an ancestor of define,
in which case Ken's version works as you can't have

    
    define
      choice
        define
          ref
