Excellent, David is absolutely correct.

changing the java line to

DOMSource dsSource = new DOMSource(xmlDoc);

fixed the problem. I was thinking you had to pass it a node, but after your comment I found you can just pass it a Document.

That's presumably setting the source object to be the top level element
ie <root> rather than the document itself, which would account for the
result you show.
