<img> in stylesheet not looked for in browser cache?

I have a page where a user click causes the contents
of a div on the page to be updated.The contents of the
div are the result of an XSLT on an XML file.My
stylesheet contains some <img> tags and it appears
these images are being downloaded from the server
everytime the div is updated. Is there anyway to avoid
this?
