Mark,
The translate() function can be used to strip whitespace.
For example, translate('Hello World!', ' ', '') returns "HelloWorld!". Use
translate($string, ' 
	', '') if you want to strip spaces, line feeds
and tabs.
You should also look at normalize-space, which trims whitespace, although
it won't be useful to you here.
