Exactly David, you're making a good point here... I was using the early
XQuery implementation built on .NET and quite enjoyed it and even wrote
about it for ASPToday.com and published a few other articles on it on my
site pietsieg.com and on topxml.com. But then they abandoned it - the factor
of having experienced the bad idea you mentioned may have influenced that
decision. Anyway, Xquery is coming in .NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 and I
can't wait to try and use it.

Following the spec seems a very difficult thing to do for them,

It was especially difficult in this case as that language went along with
their "wd-xsl" preview of XSLT and _predated_ the spec.
Even Microsoft can't be castigated for not having built a time machine.

Having a test implemtation rather loosely based on a draft spec isn't such a
bad thing. Installing it as a standard component in the most widely
installed operating system on the planet was probably a bad idea (but I
think MS have since recognised that)
