The trick to producing tables with $c columns is to say that you want to
make a row for every $c'th element and that row contains the results of
processing that element and its $c -1 following siblings the FAQ will
have more examples, but basically:
<xsl:for-each select="something[position() mod $c = 1]">
<tr>
<xsl:apply-templates select=".|following-sibling::something[position()
< c]"/>
</tr>
</xsl:for-each>
assuming the templates for the <something> elements make the <td> or you
could use a nested for-each of course.
