getting xsl:with-param to work

Hi,
    Iam having difficulty gettings params to be passed to my templates
using xsl:with-param.

Iam using oracle xml parser v2.

This is what I get

Message: campus caller
Message: student person
Message: campus caller

<xsl:apply-templates />
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="/student">
<xsl:message>student <xsl:value-of select="@name"/></xsl:message>

<xsl:apply-templates>

</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="campus">
<xsl:param name="caller" />
<xsl:message>campus caller<xsl:value-of select="$caller"/></xsl:message>
</xsl:template>
