Replace is new in XPath 2.0, so your hypothesis isn't necessary.

Oh no, I've clearly reached the stage where my internal Xpath processor
is defaulting to Xpath 2. I hope I haven't caught to much of the XSD
virus.

To the original poster, replace() replace by translate().
