It was exactly this feature that made me go to Saxon 8.
Interestingly, it was also one of the features that justified Saxon's
existence in the first place. As saxon:output, it was present from the very
earliest releases, and if that feature hadn't been needed for a couple of
important projects, they might well have decided to use xt or lotusxsl.
