but it seems to take too much time to do this, with 300+ Menu nodes.
It seems to me the test might be easier if you declared, instead of snode:
<xsl:variable name="snode-id" select="generate-id((//Menu)[number($pos)])"/>
and then your node identity test could be
<xsl:when test="generate-id() = $snode-id">
(get the document() nodes ... )
</xsl:when>
which would be faster, I bet.
