Cheers for your help guys, finally got it working.

snippet of code looks like this...

    <xsl:choose>
     <xsl:when test="SALARY&gt;350000">
      <xsl:apply-templates select=".">
       <xsl:with-param name="bgcolor">red</xsl:with-param>
      </xsl:apply-templates>
     </xsl:when>
     <xsl:when test="SALARY&lt;250000">
      <xsl:apply-templates select=".">
       <xsl:with-param name="bgcolor">grey</xsl:with-param>
      </xsl:apply-templates>
     </xsl:when>
     <xsl:otherwise>
      <xsl:apply-templates select="."/>
     </xsl:otherwise>
    </xsl:choose>
