Wendell, for the record I am *glad* you're on this list. You and a "David
Carlisle" are 2 (knowledgeable) participants who consistently post helpful
responses to the spirit of a question rather than issue often useless
pedantic observations to its letter. (I've seen quite a few examples of
the latter in my brief term on this list). That, and your didactic
writing is a pleasure to read.
Thank you: it is very gratifying to know the efforts are to good effect.
Don't be so hard on the "heavies" though! There are reasons for pedantry,
sometimes excellent reasons, and if others weren't willing to be pedantic I
would have to be more so. (And it's hard work keeping all those facts
straight!)
I accept and appreciate that pedantry goes down much better in a supportive
environment, and that it's sometimes difficult to achieve or assume that in
the weird VR-that-is-email ... but we do best when we assume that even
brusquely worded responses are meant in a spirit of generosity -- and then
we usually discover, when we have a chance, that we were right.
So think of our pedantry as really like doing battle with wooden swords: we
really don't mean to hurt each other.
Cheers,
Wendell
