Hi,
     In your xslt, you have an apply-templates with 
mode="copy" but there
is no template that invokes it.
So you may want to move your variable initialization inside 
your document
template as below:

<xsl:template match="/">

<xsl:variable name="sorted">
       <xsl:apply-templates mode="copy" select="data"/>
</xsl:variable>

       <xsl:apply-templates select="ms:node-set($sorted)/*" 
mode="main"/>

</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="item" mode="main">
 <xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:template>
