I am unfamiliar with parameter test syntax.
There is no special syntax for testing parameters.

a parameter always has a value. the value given at its point of
definition is used (only) if a value is not passed in so 

<xsl:param name="group_name" select="'noChoice'"/>

...

<xsl:if test="$group_name='noChoice'">....
