One way to do that is to write templates such as these:
<xsl:template match="b">
<bold><xsl:apply-templates/></bold>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="it">
<ital><xsl:apply-templates/></ital>
</xsl:template>
I've followed the rest of this thread only loosly, so you may have to
adapt this approach to fit the other things you are already doing in the b
and it templates.

element) as well as text nodes, and
what if i want to change the nodes <b>text here</b>
and <it>ital</it> to <bold>text here</bold> and
