I appreciate you laying out the details for me, and I will read
up on these links referred to me to get better details of "well

Unfourtunately, most documents I read don't give details on some of
the finer points of documents being "well formed" beyond standard
XML structure with tags, attributes and values. I'll keep looking though.
We're getting to the point where basic XML literacy is being taken
for granted by the how-to-do-it literature. Since they don't cover
it, they aren't telling you that "well-formedness" in XML (a
technical term) is analogous to rules like "bishops move diagonally"
in chess. If you have bishops and they are moving some way other than
diagonally, it's not chess.
You might take a look at http://xmlshoestring.com for a couple of
short pieces on such basics. (If I ever get time I might work up some
more of these.) Or E R Harold's piece at
http://www.developer.com/tech/article.php/797861 (a bit more
technical and comprehensive).
Cheers,
Wendell
