you mean actually test the code by running it rather than typing it
straight into mail messages? that will never catch on...

and the current node is in the cell 1 row 3 then there is
preceding-sibling::cell[1], 

?? If you are on the first cell of a row there is no preceding-sibling.
Note I'm using preceding-sibling::cell not preceding::cell
