Thanks to both of you for these suggestions - sorry I haven't replied earlier as our hosting provider's been trying to upgrade the server and failed to tell us that they'd imposed a requirement for SMTP authentication... </rolleyes>

I'll have a look at all this in a quiet moment tomorrow and see what I can sort out!
