a boolean as a result.
The context of this thread is XPath 1.0. It is perfectly correct to use:
preceding-sibling::*[1][self::title]
at any place where a boolean is expected, because an empty node-set
evaluates to false() and a non-empty one to true().
Xpath 1.0 has no standard function exists().
