I'm assuming this means
they will NOT be processed as XHTML elements, and hence will not
produce the result I want (which is XHTML ul and li elements)?
the code I posted would produce html or xhtml depending on whether the
default namespace in the stylesheet is null or the xhtml namespace.
If you are just rendering the result in a browser, so long as all the
elements are xhtml or all html it probably makes no difference.
