Have you looked into the exslt extensions by any chance?
I haven't looked for that function, but there's loads of functionality
there.
Cheers

Subject: [xsl] find day of week from date
Hi, I have a date of type 2007-01-28 and I need to find out the day of the
week(Monday, Tuesday, etc). Now I know that can be done with xslt 2.0 but I
am using xalan in this project and so I only can use xslt 1.0. Can anybody
tell me if it can be done in xslt 1.0 as well? 10x in advance
