and I would like to know how do I use
multiple conditions in the same if statement.

you just combine the conditions with or (or and, but it seems from your
description that you want or) But you have used or in your sample code
already, so I'm confused.

Ideally I would like not to perform the test at all if
there is no value in the $lname variable 

variables always have a value, perhaps you masn that $lname is not ''
which you can test as

test="($lname='') or (some predicate involving $lname ...)">
