Thanks for the reply. However it doesn't help me resolve my problem.
I only write xsl once in a blue moon and I have to reread Michael's book
every time. Unfortunately I don't have time to do that now. Can you tell
me how I can compare the previous value in a for-each loop with the
current value if the xsl:variable approach doesn't work. I tried using
preceding but it didn't seem to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

The problem seems to be with locally declared variables within an
xsl:for-each loop.
I declare a variable globally, then set the value locally just before
the</xsl:for-each>
This should never have worked, because you can't reassign a variable
in XSLT.
When the processing moves back to the start on the xsl:for-each, the
variable has the value of the global variable.
This is the expected outcome. Again, you probably have to rewrite your
XSLT rather thoroughly.
